SXSW 2011 Edition Podcasts

Just in time! I have finally completed one of my favorite yearly rituals. I have combed through the thousand odd mp3s made available by artists coming to play SXSW and picked out my favorites and sorted them, as best I can, in to bite size mixes so you can find what you want quickly and easily. That said, some songs don't fit easily into one category or another so there are likely hidden gems in genres you might not expect to like. And of course, I can't include everyone so I have made the decision to error on the side of choosing the unknown band. For example, I love Grupo Fantasma but once you win a Grammy you probably don't need any help from me. Anyway, enough intro, on with the music.

I have grouped the 15 short mixes into four overarching catagories: Acoustic, Rock, Hip Hop, and Electronica and then a small introduction is given, along with a tracklist. Enjoy and be sure to check back after the festival for my recap podcast with commentary.

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,

Aaron

There's always a place for the singer songwriter but don't be fooled. This ain't simply some hippy with a guitar. There are some powerful voices and writers here.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 2 - Punk then Metal

Rock 2 - Punk then Metal
As this mix evolved there was less and less metal and the term punk may not be the best choice either if you're looking for stuff from the old New York scene. But whatever, this stuff rocks. These shows are gonna be awesome.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 3 - Pop Rock

Rock 3 - Pop Rock
So I never really know what to call this genre. Alternative is so 90's and at this point is anything but alt. I have the same feeling toward the term Indie although SXSW bands probably actually do live up to the name. Either way, I like it and so do a lot of other people so here's some rock that's got a popular sound.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 4 - The World Says Dance

Rock 4 - The World Says Dance
What is it about music from outside the US that just always seems so much more danceable? We start with Austin's own Brownout, the alter ego of Grupo Fanstasma and continue with some more latin feeling songs but afrobeat is represented as well as some stuff that I'm not even sure where it came from. Regardless, this is music to make you move.

Tracklist
1. Olivadalo by Brownout
2. Condominio de Carton by RoCoal Bacalao
3. La Valentina by The Just Desserts
4. Overthrowed by DJ Chicken George
5. Khaira by Khaira Arby and her Band

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 5 - More Rock

Rock 5 - More Rock
Okay so I had to have a final catch all rock podcast. This is a grab bag of great tracks which just didn't fit nicely into the other labeled boxes. I tend to think that is probably a good thing.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Hip Hop 2 - Krunk

Hip Hop 2 - Krunk
This is another mix where the actual songs may not quite reflect the title that well. I didn't have another krunk anthem like last year's "Government Name" by Rockwell Knuckles (although he is playing again this year!). There is a heavy feel to all of these though. I really dig the Nigerian duo FOKN Bois's track Brkn Lngwjz.

Tracklist
1. Bury Me by Tedashii
2. Crowd Pleasa by El Da Sensei
3. Brkn Lngwjz by FOKN Bois
4. Cloudskipper by Epcot

SXSW 2011 Edition: Hip Hop 4 - Lyricist Lounge

Hip Hop 4 - Lyricist Lounge
Rap is an art form. Whether it is used to spread a political message, paint a picture of a life, or just to demonstrate incredible acrobatics with the English language, this mix is all about demonstrating rap at it's peak. This first track especially. Listen carefully and be amazed.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Electronica 1 - Dark and Deep

Electronica 1 - Dark and Deep
Start with a Burial-esque dubstep number with some creepy vocals and move into a more downtempo Portishead-esque feel. This is when a minimal feel can suit electronica so well. By the end however we move into some instrumental stuff that can only be described as something close to Battles.

Tracklist
1. Tunnel by Shuttle
2. Between My Sores by Leche

SXSW 2011 Edition: Electronica 3 - Dance

Electronica 3 - Dance
Seems odd to start an electronic dance mix off with an 11 piece band but that's what I'm doing. I don't know how they are going to fit into Malverde today but either way it should be awesome.

Podcast 21 - Progressive Futures

Continuing with the electronic music, I'd like to present where I think the music is headed, or at least the directions I am most interested in. They seem to be running low on names for new genres in electronic music because the tendency seems to be to just slap the word progressive in front of any number of extant labels: progressive house, progressive trance, progressive breaks... As I've said before, I'm not so interested in separating things into nicely organized boxes. What I do enjoy however, is good music and I've got a bunch of it here for you today. This mix goes out to three groups of people in particular. (in the most loving way of course)

First, those people who think Detroit techno is the only form of electronica they can ever enjoy. Okay, you don't like trance. That was more than a decade ago. There's some new sh#! out there that's kinda hot. You may wanna check it out. You can even buy it on vinyl!

Second, those people who tell me if there is a dj involved they're not interested. First off, I don't even know what that means because a dj is a disc jockey and that's the guy on the radio. You don't like music on the radio? Okay while maybe I can sympathize with that statement, basically you've probably just heard some really horrible stuff and your feelings, while rational, may change if exposed to a larger sample.

And third, while I do like a huge variety of music, to anyone that would ever come into my home and suggest some Fleetwood Mac as something I might enjoy this podcast is my answer to that.

Now it's time for me to get to work on this year's SXSW mixes. Who's excited?

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists. Even if those artists are Fleetwood Mac. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6e_1rIh-3c
