Podcast 51 - Mood Altering DnB
How do I start the next fifty podcasts? That's obvious, just like I
started the first fifty, with some drum and bass. However, I have
tried something a little different with this dnb podcast. When I've had
a rough day or something is really stressing me out, music is always
the key to lifting my spirits, in particular dnb, and the louder the
better. But, when I'm looking for that kind of a shift, I don't want to
ease into the music and ramp up slowly. I want it on full bore, right
away. There's plenty of time for mellowing out later. So, that's
exactly what we've got going on here. Hold on and enjoy.
I have also added a new feature to the blog, a Podcast Index.
This page will be updated with each new episode and contains the title
and tracklist for each of the podcasts with links to the respective blog
pages, direct downloads, and when available where to buy each track. I
wanted to have a searchable list all in one place for myself and then
once I made it, I figured why not share it with you too? So check it
out. I have amazed myself at just how huge the list is.
Reach out, connect, share your thoughts and recommendations. Whether it's through the blog, or the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com. activelistener), or by email (activelistenerpodcast@ gmail.com) doesn't matter. Just come join the conversation. The more the merrier.

Podcast 50 - Dedicated to Dispatch
Well we've made it. Podcast 50 is here and it's a big one. Almost two
hours. This is a really special episode not just because it's number 50
but it's also a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time. That
said, I'll warn you, I do kind of talk all over this one. You see, I
call it Dedicated to Dispatch but it's not so much about their music as
my story of Dispatch in my life. While I am pretty happy with the
outcome, I would say I didn't talk enough about the music. For the
non-officianados I could have done a better job of telling you who
exactly is singing and playing what instrument in each song. You see,
all three of the guys sing, play guitar, two play bass, and two play
percussion. Brad is the only band member I've seen play drum set but
they do bring in another drummer on some tracks. It all just depends on
the song. So as an introduction, for the most part Chad is on guitar
and vocals, Brad is on drums and does the high end harmony vocals, and
Pete just constantly kills it on bass. (I really meant to highlight
specific bass parts that I really love but forgot to so Greg, check out
Pete's bass on all the tracks but in particular "Here We Go").

Podcast 49 - Yearning
I can't believe we're at podcast 49! You better get excited for Podcast 50 because
I've got something special planned but, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
This podcast has a much different feel that the last few. This
collection jumps all over the genre map and I had a hard time figuring
out what it was that connected them for me but I knew there was
something. Eventually I came upon the word yearning. Initially I was
thinking "gray day yearning" but those extra two words really limit the
scope of yearning that one can imagine. Yearning does not have to
always be a depressed longing. It can also be an aspirational striving.
And a million other things. So before I box in your imagination with
more word clutter let's just get to the tunes.

Podcast 48 - African Strings and Skins
So you were probably expecting a Coachella round up podcast right?
Maybe next time. Currently I am still trying not to think about it so I
can avoid those painful waves of Coachella awesomeness withdrawal.
Basically it was a lot of fun and there was some great music. I will be
sure to get to it eventually but after all the SXSW stuff it's time for
a non festival related mix and boy do I have something special for you
today.
This podcast has some music that is very close to my heart. It is really the roots of my life as a drummer. As most of us do, I live many different lives: podcaster, phd engineer, dad, etc... but drummer is still a very important one. It's much more on the drum set these days (actually practice pad while kids sleep) but originally it was all about the djembe and that is all thanks to Budhi Harlow, my drum teacher in Santa Barbara. Drumming in a west African percussion ensemble opened my eyes and ears to a whole continent of music I hadn't really considered.

Podcast 47 - SXSW 2013 Recap with BlackBook Magazine
Time for a very special edition of the Active Listener Podcast. Our
first episode with a special guest. Enter long time friend and writer
for BlackBook Magazine, Eli Kooris.
Eli has been covering all things SXSW for BlackBook for the last few
years. As part of his articles, he too scours the 1500 odd song torrent
files
and publishes lists of his favorite bands.
Now, since I wasn't actually able to make it to Austin for SXSW this year, I needed to bring in someone who was there, on the ground. And while Eli's lists are great, he wanted a way to actually get the sounds to people, not just hand them names. Teaming up was the obvious solution.
What resulted was a list of 20 stellar bands that the world needs to hear. They come from all over the world and run the gamut of genres. Most importantly, I have to say, this was one of the most fun recordings I've ever done. We'll have to do it again. Thanks to Eli and BlackBook. Be sure to check out Eli's article here. And join us at facebook.com/activelistener to join the conversation and share you favorites from SXSW this year.
One technical note, apparently SXSW.com has already taken all the band info pages down so none of the links in the tracklists and embedded in the podcasts from the 11 mixes I put out last week will work anymore. It's pretty lame they took those down so quick and I apologize. For this podcast I have linked to the bands' homepages. If you're listening in Itunes you'll need the "Now Playing" window open to see the band images and links.

SXSW 2013 Edition (1/11) A1: Singer Songwriter
It took a little longer than expected but I have just finished one of my
favorite projects of the year, my SXSW mixes. If you aren't familiar,
what I do is download a torrent file (www.sxswtorrent.com) which has one
mp3 for (almost) every artist playing at SXSW. This comes to about
1300 songs. I then go through all of those songs and pick out 100 or so
that I really like and organize them into mixes based on genre. Now to
be fair, it really isn't possible to give every track the multiple deep
listenings necessary to truly figure out if it is great or not. This
is much more of a first impression thing so if you think I missed
someone good, by all means, please tell me. I like to think of this
project as my annual Myers-Briggs musical personality test.
The main reason for the delay this year is that I have upgraded the podcasts. They now have chapters for each song so you can skip around easily. (If you're listening in Itunes you'll need the "Now Playing" window showing) And, each chapter has the track title, artist, a picture, and a link to the SXSW artist webpage. That webpage will have a short bio / press release for the artist, where they are playing, and a link to their homepage. The last is of course the most important because that is where you are going to go to join mailing lists, find shows, and buy their stuff. It was a lot of extra work to add these features but as any long time listener I'm all about supporting the artists and I think this goes a long way toward that end.
A couple technical notes. First, if the link takes you to some website that isn't the SXSW page, that means the artist was originally scheduled to perform but then for whatever reason isn't playing at SXSW. I didn't bother taking those tracks out. Second for the sake of time, I am crowd sourcing the double checking of links, chapter marker locations, etc... If you find any problems. Shoot me an email activelistenerpodcast@gmail.com or a message on facebook http://www.facebook.com/ActiveListener.

So
we start with the more mellow stuff. These aren't necessarily acoustic
but most of them are. If you remember that Noah Gundersen track I had
on the ACL 2012 podcast well, it's on this mix too and should give you a
good idea of the sound.

Folk certainly does not cover all of these songs. Bluegrassish sound is
in here. Think Travis. And some more traditional bluegrass. Some
David Gray "Bablyon" sounding tracks. Think of this as the more uptempo
version of the A1 mix.

E1: Future Post Electronica
As I said in the intro to my previous podcast, I am at a loss to name this type of electronica. Post dubstep and future garage are possible names but those are so vague and this mix is even more broad than Podcast 46. Clearly Bonobo, doesn't fit into either of those categories. Neither does the yearning sounds of the vocal tracks like those of JMSN, tracing similar lines as James Blake. Bottom line, this stuff is just good. This used to be called experimental but if you check out the wealth of music like this on the internet you can tell, it's time has come.
