Podcast 25 - Liquid Dnb

Many of you (especially those in the States) don't know it yet but you actually love drum and bass.  You just haven't actually listened to it yet.  Today that all changes.

Liquid is a sub genre of drum and bass which nails down pretty well almost all my favorite DnB tunes.  Not that I work real hard to fit tracks into different labeled boxes but to give a general idea of what the liquid label means I'll defer to Wikipedia which says, "it contains fewer bar-oriented samples and more instrumental layers (both synthesized and natural), harmonies, and ambience, producing a calmer atmosphere directed at both home listeners and nightclub audiences."  One of the really cool parts about it for me is the drum part sounds like it is in double time to the melody a lot of the time or the melody is half time.  Either way, it's the juxtaposition that really gets me.  Of course sometimes, you gotta get dark, dirty, and just blow it up.  We've got some killer brand new stuff as well as going way back in a knod to a true originator of the genre.

Oh and I don't know what I was thinking when I recorded this podcast but there is no such thing as Hospitality Records or the Hospitality Podcast.  It's just Hospital Records and the Hospital Podcast.  I've been such a fan of theirs for so long you'd think I could at least get the name right.  Oh well.  Enjoy.

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,

Aaron

Podcast 24 - Lyricist Lounge

Who's ready for some hip hop?  I meant for this mix to focus on lyricism but it really turned into a mix of just plain awesome tracks.  Great lyrics need to be delivered with the right flow over just the right beat for a track to really hit.  That general framework for what to expect of a good tune leaves so much room for creativity.  This mix has just a few of my favorite examples.  Also, I did something a little special for you this time.  Notice that all the tracks in the tracklist are actually links taking you to the lyrics of the song.  The last one is actually a youtube that has the lyrics scrolling as the song plays.  It's pretty helpful for that song.  Just listen and you'll understand.

Podcast 23 - Chillout

Chillout has to be one of my favorite types of electronica.  To be sure I use the term quite broadly but there is just so much room for interpretation of what is chill.  This style of music allows for an incredible synergy between acoustic instrumentation and electronic production.  How else could you bring such diverse influences together into a single track?  It's really hard to describe with words.  Just take a listen and you'll see what I mean.

If you like these songs or the trip hop podcast from a while back you'll probably be interested in this song I just found yesterday.  It's off a 1998 collection of Kruder and Dorfmeister remixes and the original track is by Lamb (classic trip hop group).  I haven't heard the whole double album but if this track is any indication, I bet its amazing.  And is just me or does this song sound live?  And not just cause of the crowd noise.  Either way, absolutely killer.

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists.  Just so you know I'm doing my part too, I'm ordering the K&D remix album on import right now.

Podcast 22 - Latin

Don't get me wrong, SXSW was great.  It just wasn't as epic as last year so I'm not doing a recap podcast.  Most of the good shows I saw where artists that weren't new to me so I don't feel the urgent need to get their names out there.  So in lieu of the recap I am going to sprinkle some of these artists throughout upcoming podcasts.  If you just can't wait though, here is a short list of people whose show's were incredible and you might wanna check out if you don't know them yet.

Sims
Matt Shadetek
Thavius Beck
Afrojack
Dessa
Collie Buddz
Sauti Sol

And of course, the first two bands off this podcast, Brownout and Grupo Fanstasma.  I have chosen Latin as the theme for this mix and while I think this is one of my best podcasts so far, when sorting things Latin one immediatly runs into a problem.  As a genre title, Latin is only slightly less ambiguous than the ever popular yet utterly meaningless label, World Music.  Okay, then how did I draw the line?  Well, instead of trying to get into every little facet like salsa, merengue, cumbia, ... I just drew the circle to include music made by people that most likely can speak Spanish.  I know, I know, that leaves out Brazil but they'll get a podcast all their own sometime and like that is the only problem with my categorization.  Regardless of how you feel out this singular labeling I encourage you to just dive in.  There is a wide range of really great tunes in this one.

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,

Aaron

SXSW 2011 Edition Podcasts

Just in time! I have finally completed one of my favorite yearly rituals. I have combed through the thousand odd mp3s made available by artists coming to play SXSW and picked out my favorites and sorted them, as best I can, in to bite size mixes so you can find what you want quickly and easily. That said, some songs don't fit easily into one category or another so there are likely hidden gems in genres you might not expect to like. And of course, I can't include everyone so I have made the decision to error on the side of choosing the unknown band. For example, I love Grupo Fantasma but once you win a Grammy you probably don't need any help from me. Anyway, enough intro, on with the music.

I have grouped the 15 short mixes into four overarching catagories: Acoustic, Rock, Hip Hop, and Electronica and then a small introduction is given, along with a tracklist. Enjoy and be sure to check back after the festival for my recap podcast with commentary.

Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,

Aaron

Rock 2 - Punk then Metal
As this mix evolved there was less and less metal and the term punk may not be the best choice either if you're looking for stuff from the old New York scene. But whatever, this stuff rocks. These shows are gonna be awesome.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 3 - Pop Rock

Rock 3 - Pop Rock
So I never really know what to call this genre. Alternative is so 90's and at this point is anything but alt. I have the same feeling toward the term Indie although SXSW bands probably actually do live up to the name. Either way, I like it and so do a lot of other people so here's some rock that's got a popular sound.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 4 - The World Says Dance

Rock 4 - The World Says Dance
What is it about music from outside the US that just always seems so much more danceable? We start with Austin's own Brownout, the alter ego of Grupo Fanstasma and continue with some more latin feeling songs but afrobeat is represented as well as some stuff that I'm not even sure where it came from. Regardless, this is music to make you move.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Rock 5 - More Rock

Rock 5 - More Rock
Okay so I had to have a final catch all rock podcast. This is a grab bag of great tracks which just didn't fit nicely into the other labeled boxes. I tend to think that is probably a good thing.

SXSW 2011 Edition: Hip Hop 2 - Krunk

Hip Hop 2 - Krunk
This is another mix where the actual songs may not quite reflect the title that well. I didn't have another krunk anthem like last year's "Government Name" by Rockwell Knuckles (although he is playing again this year!). There is a heavy feel to all of these though. I really dig the Nigerian duo FOKN Bois's track Brkn Lngwjz.
